We live in a data driven world. Everything we engage with has become data to be interrogated, manipulated, recycled, sold, and reported on.
With the ever-increasing digitisation of our lives, through work and play, data has become the fuel for everything we engage with. With all this data regulatory hurdles have arisen for all companies, from POPI, GDPR to FICA and all the legal ramifications if you mishandle or do not have the correct policies, procedures, and systems in place to not only prove your compliance, but to enforce your own compliance, carries penalties that could put a business under.
To put into perspective here are some interesting statistics
- Data volumes have skyrocketed. More data was generated in the last two years than in the entire human history before that.
- The big data growth we’ve been witnessing is only natural. We constantly generate data. On Google alone, we submit 40,000 search queries per second. That amounts to 1.2 trillion searches yearly
- Surprisingly, 99.5% of collected data never gets used or analysed.
- Worldwide data is expected to hit 175 zettabytes by 2025, representing a 61% CAGR
- SaaS is growing in popularity, with 50% of companies citing automatic maintenance as a reason to adopt, 45% citing lower cost than in-house solutions, and 45% citing faster deployment

To stress again, the integrity, security, and backup of the data you have/use/interrogate within your Microsoft 365 environment is completely your responsibility.

A common misconception is that one can use Onedrive as a form of backup. This is a dangerous misconception, as anything that happens within your local environment will be replicated into your Onedrive environment, unauthorised changes, deletions, and yip you guessed it, Ransomware encryption and other viruses will be replicated into the Onedrive environment thereby compromising all your data.
With an ever increasingly connected world, and our increased reliance on data, and the availability of that data, it’s imperative to have a comprehensive Cloud based backup and recovery strategy to combat todays and tomorrow’s threats to your data.
